HIKING WATERTON

WATERTON LAKES NATIONAL PARK, ALBERTA

Designed as an add-on to the Lightchasers Conference (where I will be a speaker) the following three days, this workshop will be a great way to explore the wonderful Waterton Lakes National Park in early season, before it gets too crowded. We will split our time between the field, hiking and photographing landscapes, and the lecture room where I will be presenting my work, teaching best practices and doing (voluntary) group portfolio reviews.

With spring season and limited crowds, wildlife should be very active in the park. This won't be a specific focus of the workshop, but I expect there to be many opportunities for some good wildlife photography. We can expect to see bighorn sheep, elk and mule deer, as well as moose, marten and black bear if we are lucky (and even big cats if we are very lucky). We will brief everyone on safe wildlife practices, and require participants to carry bear spray at all times.

The hiking will be quite moderate so we can focus on getting the best images. Trails might still be quite snowy, which we will take into account when choosing itineraries.
